My Way of Life

Good Monday all you little Handbaggers. My mood is a about 7 today which is quite good for a Monday. My thoughts are with my Christopher today who has been in California for the past two weeks. Please send good thoughts his way.
We had our second round of SCARRIE workshop auditions and saw a wonderful group of young men read for the role of Carrie White, including one that was actually 17 years old. I'd like to tell you that we made some final casting decisions but I can't due to the fact that all the people who were supposed to be called in were not called in for one reason or another which quite frankly is a bit annoying, but things like this happen so the process continues...,

My Way of Life

God, why am I so tired in the morning? I just absolutely hate getting out of bed. It's not like I have day filled with dreadful tasks to look forward to or anything. I mean work is boring, but it beats the hell out of being unemployed. I've felt this way about waking up since I was a young child. Probably has something to do with parental abuse...I'm sure it's my mothers fault. I've always felt that I am the secret love child of Jerry Lewis and Bianca Jagger so maybe I got Bianca's 'late-night' gene. Most of my good friends know that I spent the eighties 'working' in night clubs which meant sleeping all day and partying all night and even though I never want to do that again I think there's a creature inside of me that's holding out and refuses to participate in this whole fulfilling life bullshit'. Those are the creature's words, not mine..., The creature does it's best to make me late for work, not to go to the gym and it even stops me from writing by throwing broken glass on my creative highway, dammit!

No, I still haven't completed that damn Margaret White song either..., Oh, and I'm sick of the Olympics too. Except when they show male swimmers..., or gymnasts or...,

My Way of Life

Last night I went to Highland Park to work on Margaret White songs with Scott Lamberty. While we working on the second song I decided the first song was rather lame and now I'm not sure if I should revisit the original song from 1998 (You Can Pray) or start fresh. When I got home I quickly popped in the DVD to examine the opening Carrie and Margaret White scene for inspiration, waiting for a key phrase to jump into my lap. The problem with Carrie is there are so many phrases that 'jump into your lap' that they get all tangled up.
'Eve was weak' (This is the title of a song in the Broadway flop)
'You're a woman now'
'Curse of blood'
'SAY IT!'
'Loose the raven on the world'

See what I mean? They're all song titles. I noticed that the book Margaret reads from is not the Bible, but a little ditty entitled 'The Sins of Woman', another potential song title. I'll wait until God gives me a sign.

Well, 90% of SCARRIE The Musical workshop is cast. The other 10%, and it is a significant 10%, has yet to be cast. The role of Carrie and Margaret White. We're having one more invited audition on Saturday. I must say we have some great people on board and I'm hyped. I went to the gym last night for the second day in a row. After my workout I picked up a bottle of Aleve at Walgreens. I hate punching in my age on the cardio machine. I fear one day I will do it and a siren will go off and everybody at the gym will stop what they're doing and laugh at me.

My Way of Life

Taylor Ross reworked some of the SCARRIE songs for me and they sound good. Too bad I'm singing on the demos..., I finally went to the gym after a 9 day hiatus and I felt like a Pee Wee Herman in a world of Mark Wahlbergs. It was pretty obvious something was off kilter because I just couldn't sustain the regular weight I usually lift. I just totally petered out out. I really hate the fact that I see these guys with big guts bench pressing a lot of weight and I can't because of my 9 year old girl wrists. How do you bulk up your wrists? There was a pretty hot, shaved head edgy rock guy with a rocking bod', listening to his CD player working out while I struggled, making my pitiful workout a bit more enjoyable. . I imagined he was listening to the Ramones or The Buzzcocks- you know, something super cool and punk rock. Unfortunately, peanut head guy, who incidentally has a twerpy body like mine, ambushed him and wouldn't stop talking to him. I immediately assumed they knew each other from Crobar or some circuit scene and they were discussing the latest 19 minute Madonna remix, and it just ruined the fantasy for me. Speaking of my favorite Cheetah gym dudes, I saw one of my ABSOLUTE favorites on Big Muscle.com. No, he wasn't naked, but his pictures certainly don't do his body justice.

I spent Sunday night alone since Ludwig and BC have not returned my last couple of phone calls so I went to Mike Millers to pick up the NEW artwork for the new Poseidon! An Upside Down Musical CD and gathered all the paperwork, double checked it and wrote a letter to the company that's replicating the CD. We are going to have a silkscreened CD label, a new Poseidon Megamix, and the edited version of Just Panties (What Else Do I Need? ) on the upcoming CD. Mike has also added some great new pictures. I miss Poseidon...,

My Way of Life

We had auditions for the SCARRIE The Musical workshop today and saw some good people but I must admit we didn't achieve are entire casting goal. Stay tuned for Part 2...,

I was supposed to see Derek in Merrily We Roll Along. Most shows start at 8, right? Not this one. I double checked the time at 7:05, and by 7:10 I was in my car speeding to Chicago Dramatists, but alas, I was too late- they were completely sold out, having given away my reservation. The sons of bitches obviously didn't know who I was...,I made good time, because the show hadn't even started yet but my risky drive proved fruitless. So..., I called 'music guy, #2', Taylor and chatted...music talk, then popped in my SCTV DVD's. Now I'm typing at midnight on a Saturday. What a glamorous life I lead.

My Way of Life

Good morning kiddies. Another wasted cloudy and cool day in Chicago with a 40% chance of rain. We have not had much of a summer at all here and it's hard to believe that we're fast approaching September.

Last night I saw a preview performance of 'Camp Nimrod for Girls' featuring an enthusiastic, winning cast brimming with youthful energy. It's described as a 'coming of age' musical comedy about a girl that falls in love with her horse at summer camp. Okay...,

I went to support my homies, Jay Paul Skelton-director, Brigitte Ditmars- choreographer, Jackie Anderson, Rob Steel, and of course Ginger Spice. I sat with Matt Gunnels, Handbag ensemble member and director of the SCARRIE! workshop. Afterwards, I drove him home and we chatted a little about the Saturday auditions for high school girls and Margaret White. This, will admittedly, be tough because a lot of the folks auditioning are friends and I hate to say no. Just ask anybody at the Bally's locker room.

My Way of Life

Monday night I went to Sidetracks at the insistence of my pal, Ryan, who was visiting from NYC. Monday nights at Sidetracks are very popular because it's showtune night. Many theater types, chorus boys and would be singers attend and just sing their little hearts out with unabashed abandon usually fueled by alcohol consumption. Going to Sidetracks is a little like watching a soap opera you haven't seen in a few months, only in this case it's been running for about 20 years. They tend to play the same videos over and over and over. Barbra, Judy, Aretha ..., Attending this Gayfest weekly would be dreadfully boring , but sprinkled throughout the year it's enjoyable. I saw some new clips (gasp!) from Wicked (an awful, overblown song about gravity- I think it's called 'Gravity') and 'Forget About the Boy' from 'Thoroughly Modern Millie' which I love. I'm surprised Sutton Foster hasn't had her own flop sitcom yet- she's, as they would say in the industry, a 'winner'.

I was the first to leave and as I walked down Halsted street to my car a young man, who I saw walking down Halsted on my way to Sidetracks earlier stopped me and looking quite agitated blurted out. "Do you think I'm cute???!!!" I immediately said 'YES!', even though his eyebrows looked too waxed and I suspect he could have blended his base a little better, and with that I walked away from him. I wonder how many other people he asked. I knew how he felt.

My Way of Life

It's Saturday evening and I've spent this lovely Saturday in Chicago trying to write a new song for SCARRIE! The Musical. Specifically- a new opening song, and it's difficult to do, especially when you have the old opening song embedded in your brain. Lyrically the old song is perfect, but melodically it just doesn't fit the new approach we're going for. Sorry to be so vague but Stephen Sondheim might be trolling the internet for new song or show ideas so you can never be too careful. Now it's 10pm and I feel like shit for having wasted the day. Last night I saw Latin spitfire and good friend Edward Thomas Herrera's show 'Fun while It Lasted'. Beautiful, funny and frank- just like Edward. He announced the show has been extended so I suggest you make your reservations now.

I just reached level 7 on Pop and Drop so I thought I'd share it with the world.

Last night I went through a mountain of POSEIDON! An Upside Down Musical CD's and such for Randall Stevens, who is directing the show for the Nebraska AIDS Project this December. I will post more details as they happen but I can tell you the running dates are slated for Nov. 26- Dec. 10, Thurs.-Sun. shows. I desperately want to see go to Omaha to see it but I guess that depends on the Rudolph rehearsal schedule. I ended up retiring at midnight and turning the television off after Cheers. Waking up is difficult without my Christopher and his adorable nagging but I managed to get to work at a decent hour (on time). Tonight Mrs. Hickson and I are going to see the lovely Edward Thomas-Herrera perform at Live Bait. Edward (a good friend of mine) received a glowing review in the Chicago Tribune a few days ago. I'm glad for him- he needs the work.

That's all I've got. Please amuse yourself with this intriguing Cinemorgue site.

Spent last night at Taylor's house pounding out SCARRIE music. Rock music is difficult (for me at least) to translate from the head to paper. I can hear these songs in my head but when it comes to sitting down and conveying what I want where, I either go blank or I don't know what the term is for what I want so I end up mimicking the effect I want which is frustrating and a bit embarrassing for everybody involved. Dropped the old man at the airport this morning. Let the PARTY begin!

My Way of Life

Today is Christopher's official birthday. I won't say how old he is but he's already retired from his job. I have absolutely no idea what to get him for his birthday. When he wants something he buys it- you know the type. We had a nice gathering for him Sunday. I tried to keep it to people that actually knew Christopher. At the insistence of the 3 1/2 year old Charlie McKune we watched Finding Nemo and Pirates of the Caribbean. By the way , when you watch Pirates with Charlie you should know that HE is Capt. Jack Sparrow. Not you, but him, although his patient older brother Max would beg to differ with him. For those of you new to the Handblog, Chris is my partner, my boyfriend, my lover, my husband, my other half. I hate trying to think of an appropriate name for whatever it is we are. To me he's just Chris. He's also on the Handbag board of directors so drop him a birthday greeting if you so desire.

Yesterday, or was it the day before yesterday, it was Herbie the Elf II, Dan Hickey's birthday. Dan is in his 50's I believe and looks smashing, even when he's naked. Handbag update? I'm working on more music with Taylor Ross tonight. Taylor has supplied me with demo CD's with yours truly singing the lead and once you get over the initial shock/repulsion it's actually kind of entertaining. Like Dinah Shore singing '50 Ways to Leave Your Lover'. Yes, I actually have this little dittie on one of my Carol Burnett videos. Yes, it's what you would imagine and more.

My Way of Life

Okay, I'm a little behind on my Blogging but I have a good reason. Well, a not so good reason..., Yes, I've been working on SCARRIE! songs, and I would love to say I'm so immersed in that process that I can't do anything else, but the truth is I'm totally addicted to Pop and Drop, some Yahoo game that I'm sure a 10 year would have mastered in a day, but it's taking me a little longer to catch on. It's a fairly simply game. You shoot these marbles and the goal is to get three colors in a role and they drop off the screen. The game is complete when there are no more marbles and you have a blank table. Then you go to the next level. The highest level I got to was 4. I mention this to BC Kalz and he casually says there are many more levels- he knows, because HE'S reached them! Yes, we're talking about the same BC Kalz that played Jayne Mansfield in Touched By Jayne Mansfield. After hearing this I haven't left my computer- I mean if that trash can can do it, why can't I? I've only reached level 5 and it's driving me crazy. Please kill me.

My Way of Life

MyRudolph the Red-Hosed Reindeer meeting was cancelled yesterday so I had some unexpected 'me time'. I used it to go to the gym after a lot of hemming and hawing while I drank Diet Coke and watched The Simpsons. Fellow stud muffin Handbag ensemble member Chad McLaughlin was there and we traded muscle building techniques and caught up with each other's other fascinating lives. Some of the Cheetah regulars were there like the bossy gay Ray Romano guy, peanuthead guy, one of my admirers (nice, but that's about it...), and the usual bunch of tattooed hunks and serious looking women. I watched a bit of Extreme Makeover while I did cardio and they sure the hell do a lot of work on those people. There was the person I thought was a transsexual who kept getting girlier and girlier with each procedure. They even had to teach the broad how to walk in high heels. Turns out she was a bio woman after all. Plus, she was in the army but still fat. ??? I thought they didn't let fat people in the army?

Thanks to the miracle of modern technology Scott Lamberty was able to e-mail me his first completed song, 'Sin Never Dies' , Margaret White's final song. It's a simple ballad and I was pleased with the results.

The Soundtrack of My LIFE

Constant viewings of my special edition CARRIE DVD have led to the amazing Pino Donnagio soundtrack being stuck in my head, matching my every action note for note, particularly the 'Bucket of Blood' section..., You know, the music that leads up to the infamous bucket of blood being dumped on Carrie White. I love this scene and can watch it over and over and over. I love the way Nancy Allen licks her lips in hot anticipation. I love the way Betty Buckley pushes Amy Irving out of the gym, slams the door, and leans against it, to catch her breath. Then there's 'School in Flames', the music/noise playing when Carrie's decided 'enough is enough'. I've repeatedly watched this scene over and over and over, usually alone, because Christopher just wouldn't understand. I mean if something's good once, it's even better x 100! I love the split screen, although Brian DePalma confesses he would have edited it differently today. I like how the boys get stuck in the door and writhe in pain although it's not really clear why they're in pain. I assume the door is really hot. In a perfect world we'd be able to recreate Miss Collins death scene on the stage. Damn it Carrie, she wasn't laughing, it was all in your head! Or was it?

My Way of Life

Jammin' with Taylor

Last night I was at the home of Taylor Ross, rocking out, man. I'm not sure what the kids are calling it these days but Taylor is helping me with the SCARRIE songs that have a decidedly rock flavor. Taylor's musical knowledge is pretty intense, so when I say 'this is like Phil Spector meets T-Rex', he has an idea of what I mean. This didn't prevent me from mimicking the guitar and drum sounds I thought would be appropriate like the 'Don't Worry, Be Happy' guy.

Taylor has about 4 different keyboards in his house and a shitload of boxes and computers and things to help make music. I sang the songs myself so the workshop cast of SCARRIE may have the pleasure of a CD with the songs sung by yours truly to listen to at their leisure.

We worked on 'Wham, Bam Beautiful', the glam rock inspired pig killing song, 'Gonna Make you Sweat', Miss Collins funkified punishment drill and the new 'I'm Going to Prom' a new wave Phil Spector type of deal that the students sing while they prepare for the prom (duh!). Taylor also gave me the names of some musicians that might be interested working with a third world theater company for a bowl of porridge. I hope they're hungry...,

I usually go to bed at about midnight or 1am watching what I consider one of the best television programs ever..., Cheers. TVLand is in the the Diane Chambers/Shelly Long cycle now, and despite Ms. Long's reported bouts of difficulty you realize why they put up with it when you see her work. She's pretty brilliant with impeccable timing. The Diane shows are also a lot more intelligent with references that I'm sure the majority of TV viewers today (and then) probably didn't understand. How many sitcoms have a jokes referring to Desdemona? Besides Frasier, I'm sure you could count them on one hand. Anyway, I stray...the reason I mention this is I always think of Merrie Greenfield when I watch Diane Chambers, or is it when I'm watching Shelly Long play the character of Diane Chambers. I realize this is one of those odd shaped compliments but I can't help myself. I dare any Greenfield groupies to watch a Diane Chambers Cheers and not come to the same conclusion!

My Way of Life

Today finds me a bit tired. Christopher and his damn tossing and turning kept me awake long past midnight. I just couldn't get into a sleep groove. Perhaps I was worrying about the potential eminent coup I accidentally witnesses on my way to the gym yesterday. I was cheerfully walking down Clark street in Andersonville when who should I spy in the Starbucks but ensemble members Steve Hickson, Ron Kelly and Jim Glaub hunched over a table with important looking papers in front of them. I thought I saw a familiar looking stick figure with an arrow sticking out of it's head and blood dripping on the paper but it could have just been my imagination. I immediately confronted them and they gave me some lame excuse about meeting for the 112th installment of 'Rudolph, the Red-Hosed Reindeer'. Is it already that time of the year?

My Way of Life

Please don't think the picture post was some ego-driven thing (like most of my activities?)- I had to post the picture for my Blogger profile because I'm to dumb to figure out how to do it the correct way. Or maybe that is the correct way, who knows?

Freaky random Google search- I found this picture while searching Google images for a picture of Peter Storms. I thought it was kind of funny/creepy. Who's Peter Storms? Funny you should ask. He's the new music director for the SCARRIE! The Musical workshop. Hoo-ray! I just got confirmation from him about an hour ago so I can breathe a little easier now.

My Way of Life

Oh my, I've been a busy little beaver. I'm happy to report I turned in my first SCARRIE draft 2 days early. Most of the work put into this were new songs of which there are 10, with tweaks and adjustments to existing ones. In some cases the new songs have replaced previous songs, and that was difficult to do. You just get used to a certain song, no matter how 'blah' it actually was. I wanted to give 'I'm Going to the Prom' a little more emotional meat to it and although I loved the annoying stick in your head original, I knew that had to be changed. To this day if I ask my other half, Christopher where he's going he sings 'I'm going to the gym' to the tune of the original 'I'm going to the prom', which was written to have a 'Grease' kind of feeling to it. I did adjust the script trying to expand a bit on what to me is a fascinating component to the story of Carrie, and that is the nature of the high school female animal . I think one of the reasons I'm passionate about this story is because like Carrie White, high school and home for me were not an ideal time for me and I can relate. There were some mean kids in school and the girls seemed to be the worst. I suppose it's a blessing I didn't have telekinetic powers in high school, but don' think I didn't think about it. Not full murderous powers like Carrie White but maybe fun, mischievous powers like Scott Baio in 'Zapped'. Okay, maybe a couple of murderous powers...,

Last night I went to Donna Lobello's 25th birthday party at around midnight and it was fun to see some of the cast of How Whatever Happened to Baby Jane Happened. We sat in a circle in Donna's bedroom and just chatted, like we were playing spin the bottle or something. We tried to get Ed Jones drunk enough to dance for us but to no avail.

The night before I met Merrie Greenfield at the Cornservatory to see Durang's 'Sister Mary Ignatius Explains it All to You' with Jillian Erickson, Gary Layne and Kelly Anchors, who did a great job. I ended up getting a flat tire. Apparently I had a slow leak before I left and it was pretty flat by the time the play ended. Today my neighbor (the nice one) told me he saw it (the de-flated tire) Friday late afternoon, and on the way to the theater that night a foreign gentleman and his wife pointed wildly to my car as they crossed the street and made a goofy face. Not knowing what they were talking about I smiled and nodded my head in agreement. Thank God, Gary Layne, a cast member who also worked on 'The Birds' was there and graciously offered to help change the tire. Well, actually he changed the tire while I stood idly by..., He's a good guy. Did you notice how I mentioned Kelly Anchors was in the show oh so casually? I e-mailed her to ask if it was okay to come and she was all right with it so I went. I also saw Ms. Anchors again today at Lon Ellenberger's extraordinary Doctoral Recital at Northwestern University. We hadn't spoken for a couple of years besides press statements (that makes me laugh as I type it) and it was good to see her. Really, I don't even know if it's worth the effort to go into it. Either you know the story or you don't but things happen the way they're supposed to happen I suppose.
