My Way of Life- Hello there!

So my Blogging has been short and sweet if at all lately. There are few reasons for this. Layoffs at work mean I shouldn't spend as much time doing this. Christopher, I'm on a break...
Also, you know, there's a show, which in theory should make me Blog more, but I'm busier. We have Rudolph the Red-Hosed Reindeer auditions tonight. Yes, it's that time of year already.

Caged Dames is going great and we're getting some of our best reviews ever. The first Highly Recommended Handbag show in The Reader and we topped Steppenwolf's Pillowman as the #1 Don't Miss show in TimeOut Chicago. SMACK!

So, why aren't the houses bigger? Chris Jones, my FRIEND told people to wait a couple of weeks. Do people read that far into the review? Is it the Halloween weekend? WHAT? We're stepping up our marketing efforts with Constant Contact, so if you haven't already signed up for our e-mail list, please do so. You'll get Special notices and money saving coupons, so sign up-No, not you Aaron, I have your 11 e-mail accounts already. We only run 5 weeks, so get your ass to the show. I mean, please join us...

My Way of Life- Sandy West, RIP

Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting

Yesterday I found out that Ms. Sandy West, co-founder of the Runaways died at age 47. Sandy was a true rock an roll pioneer and The Runaways were a band like no other. Started by Sandy and Joan Jett, they were really the first (sort of) punk all women band. The fact that they had feather hair and wore spandex makes them even more punk. It was the 70's. I spent many a nights listening to the Runaways with my friend Andy in his basement after work. Andy told me that his favorite review of The Runaways was in Creem magazine. Three simple words. 'These bitches suck!' Even though some of their skills were less then polished and they were managed by creepy/cool Kim Foley they were still miles ahead of their time. Cherry Bomb is STILL being covered by many bands and to this day is the BAD ASS ROCK CHICK/FEM BOY anthem!
You will be missed Ms. West. Do they have lycra and platform boots in the afterlife?

My Way of Life

Yikes! I'm a bit spent after this week. We had a glorious sold out opening night. Really exciting stuff. Just what I need after attending the funeral of my beloved Nana that same morning. This along with tech week made me a bit frazzled but all of the Caged Dames and Hell in a Handbag folks were a tremendous help and Nana lived a full rich life. It was her time to go. We had a house full full of press and supportive friends and fans. The feedback was very enthusiastic, so we shall, shan't we? Tonight is Tippi Hedren and Veronica Cartwright. Yay!

Chicago, IL – Hell in a Handbag Productions is proud to announce a special benefit performance of their shocking new musical Caged Dames. Proceeds benefit the Roar Foundation/Shambala Preserve, founded by their good friend Tippi Hedren, star of the classic films, The Birds and Marnie, directed by Alfred Hitchcock. Ticket holders are also invited to a pre-show reception for appetizers, a cash bar and a chat with Tippi!

Caged Dames by David Cerda is a musical parody of 1950’s women in prison/exploitation films that tells the gripping tale of an innocent young woman who - through a series of unfortunate events - finds herself in the Calumet City Women’s Penitentiary. Needles to say, her life changes forever…
The Tippi Hedren/ Hell in a Handbag connection began in the Fall of 2001 when Ms. Hedren attended the critically acclaimed Chicago production of The Birds, an offbeat adaptation of the classic Hitchcock film. When this adaptation, written by David Cerda and Pauline Pang opened in Los Angeles in 2005, Tippi Hedren helped champion the LAWeekly Theater Award nominated production.

‘I’m thrilled to have Tippi with us’ says David Cerda, Artistic Director of HIAH Productions. ‘I’m a huge fan of hers and a friend and I’m so glad we can help the Roar Foundation. She’s just a wonderful woman’.

The Roar Foundation’s Shambala Preserve, founded by Tippi Hedren, is a 501(C)(3)nonprofit, tax-exempt charitable organization that provides sanctuary for exotic animals - who have suffered from gross mistreatment and neglect - so they can regain their physical and mental health and live out their lives in dignity.

I don't get to watch that much television lately what with Caged Dames opening next week, but when I do I can't seem to escape this ultra annoying commercial for the Gap. You know the one. It features Audrey Hepburn dancing to AC/DC's Back in Black, because it's a commerical for skinny BLACK pants. Yeah, I get it. It's not that I hate celebrities shilling from beyond the grave. It just depends, Fred Astaire dancing with a vacuum cleaner = bad. Doris Day and Joan Crawford for the phone company= funny. That dance they have Ms. Hepburn doing to an unabashed head-banging, burn out classic is just stupid and wrong. Somebody make it stop!

Ugh. Caged Dames this. Caged Dames that. Lines. Since when did memorizing lines get so difficult? I guess I haven't had a 'larger' part since How Whatever Happened to Baby Jane Happened and this isn't as many lines, bit for some reason I can't seem remember all of my blocking and spit out the words at the same time. I know, you're shocked! We rehearsed from 1- 5 today and then a few of us went to Brigitte's house to run lines. We load in tomorrow so there's no rehearsal but I'm hoping to see ensemble members. I loaded up on bad fast food food to eat in a hurry. Chris and I saw The Science of Sleep last night. Very interesting concept but ultimately a bit confusing for me. 2 Handbags. Chris liked it better then I did for what I suspect is the same reason I gave it TWO Handbags. The freaking sexylisimo Gael Garcia Bernal.

My Way of Life

Rehearsal consisted going over that bitch of an opening number last night. Caged Dames, we got our kids all mad, Caged Dames, because we shot their dad...Divorce costs a heap, but murder is cheap...the dance for it is a bear and thank God I don't enter until the end. The song is really about the prisoners so it makes sense the warden isn't in most of it. Andra and Shawn are very patient and the cast is working their little caged butts off. I got a box of wigs in the mail yesterday and oh what a thrill that was. Some real beauties too! My style is called the 'Fluff'. Tina Haglund will be wearing the 'Ernestine' while Adrienne Smith prefers the New Gatsby. I love wig names. Some Girls is one of my favorite album covers. I bought that album when it was an album and for my money it's the last brilliant Stones release. Oh, I went off on a tangent, didn't I? I got out of rehearsal a bit early and was going to try and hit the gym for a 3rd time in 4 days but I took pity on BC Kalz, who plays Sheila Mercury, aka Blondie and gave him a ride home in the torrential rain. I almost had to pull over it was so bad. Please don't let the world end before out show opens...

My Way of Life

Its Sunday morning and I woke up with a bit of a sinus headache. My allergies have been a constant presence lately, which really sucks, but there could be worse worries, couldn't there? Last night BC, myself and Lon Ellenberger saw Nina Hagen last night the Estrojam Festival. I don't even know what it is. It's LADY oriented and there were a mix of punk, hippy and to my horror of horrors the hippy/punk chicks (I have to think of a name for them). They obviously are trying to combine both elements of style and fail miserably at both. They are more likely to be excepted by hippy chicks then punk chicks because of course, the hippies are nicer and are least likely to tell them to fuck off. Nina is one of the few who can pull of the punk hippy chick thing in my eyes. One of my biggest gripes about these women is their inability to wear the right make-up and accessories and clothing. Nina looked HOT. She's lost a bit of weight since I last saw her, so she's even slimmer (not that she looked bad before), and she was her ususal funny, loving, very eccentric NINA SELF. My only gripe is she was a little more hippy in her song choices. Closing with Save the Children as she strummed the guitar was a little too Airplane meets Sid and Nancy for me. I like her positive messages yelled and snarled through a wall of kick in the door guitar riffs, but, hey, it's her show and she does what she wants. I still love the gal.

I have to skip church to go to a meeting at the Bailiwick Theater (big news coming) and go shopping with Heath Hays, are set designer. Heaths a very cool guy. Quiet, married to a very talented actress and is just a man of few words who knows how to build things. Now I'm off to finish memorizing Act 2 of Caged Dames and work on my choreography.
