My Way of Life

Hope you all had a decent holiday, lovies. Mine was okay. Santa was nice to me and brought me some very cool presents like iPod accessories, a book of Bad Girls, Film Fatales and Sirens a cool purple velourish blazer. My sister Denise and brother in law John gave me an amazing little t-shirt with publicity pictures from Handbag shows and what I think are from my Myspace page. Me and Tippi, Charles and I- with Hell in a Handbag Productions on the back of it. The creators own a shirt shop in Whiting , IN and have been to Handbag shows. They did a terrific job, I was so flattered.

The day after Christmas was another funeral for our family. My other grandmother passed away last Thursday, Dec. 21. She was 90. Just about 2 months after the death of my Nana (my mom's mother). So my dad had a lot on his mind this Christmas. Grandma Cerda was just about the kindest woman I can think of. As one my cousins stated in her eulogy she always tried to find the good in people and believe me, as a family we all tested her patience, as all families do. I am all out of grandparents.

I am off for the entire week and I'm finding I don't want to leave the house. I had coffee with my good friend Sean Graney today (he often calls me for advice), and we talked about our respective companies. You know, Artistic Director talk. We plan on having a pajama party with David Zak and Nathan Allen soon. Christopher and I saw Notes on a Scandal, a delightful little dish with Judi Dench and Cate Blanchett. Wonderful dialogue and situations, and yes, Dame Dench kicks ass, as does Ms. Blanchett. 3 Handbags

Much love!

What a week. Many highs ands lows. Now I have a nut posting my phone number on my blog. Of course I have a mental list of the people that crazy (and there are some) that could take the time to find out that kind of information about me and write boring little nasty things about me. I guess i know why some people are still in favor of the death penalty. Ho Ho Ho.

The Jayne Mansfield/John Waters connection is evident in the two photos above. Funny how you make connections to things that you LOVE later in life.
We lost another great one this past week. The wildly innovative Van Smith who is responsible for creating Divine, and all the unforgettable John Waters character's looks. I can't stress enough what an influence Mr. Smith was in fashion, film and music. He along with John Waters created the GOOD punk rock look (lots of eyeliner+ touch of leather+ touch of camp) when there was no punk rock. I don't mean 'inner' punk, I mean full out in your face horrifyingly tacky, fagilicious, serial killer punk. BC Kalz alerted me to Van's passing by sending me the New York Times obituary. The Baltimore Sun has nice write up on him too.

My Way of Life- GIFTS

Let's not forgot when you shop at Amazon via Handbag we get cash, so I thought I'd make you aware of some gift options that surely nobody else will buy for your intended- plus you'll get points for being WAY COOL.

Why a Tim Conway collection? Well, he's like a legend and stuff, but the REAL treasure here is a a skit called 'The Warden' featuring Joan Crawford. No, I didn't model my Warden on this sketch. I haven't even seen the show as I don't own it-yet.

You really can't go wrong with a John Waters collection. It really kills me to find out how many of the younger people aren't aware of his pre-Hairspray films which is in his words, a dirty shame. It's funny how so many of his films depended on the pin point accurate delivery of his words by Divine, Mink Stole, Edith Massey and the old school gang. Guest actors like Kathleen Turner, Suzanne Shepherd, and Mary Garlington NAIL it, probably because they've got a bit of that 'outsider' blood in them. Others like Melanie Griffith, fall flat. Tracey Ullman does okay but Mink Stole OWNS A Dirty Shame. Joey Heatherton is in Cry Baby!

Have you seen this? This deserves a mention just for the very funny and clever website.

Handbag cutie Derek Czaplewski would probably like this little dittie.

Brigitte Ditmars would LOVE to have this fill her stocking...

On a budget? Mike Miller recommends this Poseidon Adventure book by Paul Gallico for 98 cents!
The book is NOT like the film. The climbers strip down to their underwear. Nonnie is a circus performer ( a monkey!). Linda Rogo is a total hateful racist bitch (as opposed to a loving racist bitch) and Belle Rosen farts. None of the women fare well in the book but I don't want to spoil it for you...Oh, Robin dies.

My Way of Life- Other peoples Blogs

Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting

Since everybody knows I'm not above stealing material from others the above newspaper clipping (which is the stuff I live for) is from A Hole in the Head, Johnny's blog. Johnny was brought to my attention by BC after he wrote about The Poseidon Adventure and I've been hooked ever since. You must read his collection of articles about collection freaks. I think my friend David Kodeski would appreciate this as well. Johnny has also started publishing entries from his 1977 diary, which I absolutely love. I've asked Johnny to marry me a couple of times but he hasn't responded. I wish I kept a journal back then. It wouldn't have been pretty... I probably never did this because I had absolutely no privacy growing up. We lived in a small house with 4 kids. I always had to share a room with my brother who is 5 years younger then me, and our bedroom didn't even have a door. Try living with that when you're a teenager.

My Way of Life- One for the Queers

What is it with homos and big black girls that sing well? Although I love her story, I'm already a bit over all the press this film and Ms. Hudson are getting. Yes, I KNOW it's a rag to riches tale and everything I've read about her indicates she's a lovely, lovely girl, and of course I'm thrilled she's stealing the limelight from the PRE-FAB CORPORATE ENTITY known as Beyonce Knowles, but my inner punk rocker is sort of rolling his eyes at all of this. I'm old enough to remember the original Dreamgirls Jennifer Holliday Brouhaha. I worked at gay bar's throughout the 80's and whenever You're Gonna Love Me came on you would think we were in a Pentecostal church. The boys would start screaming and fainting and were just overcome with joy in general. I didn't get it. I kind of still don't. All you have to is go to Sidetracks and listen to Ms. Holliday inhale that huge swoosh of breath before her final 'YOU'RE GONNA LOVE ME!!!!'.

My Way of Life- Gay Elves and $1 Drinks...

Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting

The Elves of Rudolph the Red-Hosed Reindeer, everyones' favorite wicked little darlings of society will be performing at Crew Bar and Grill this Wednesday, December 13th. It's Crew's Naughty or Nice Holiday party. Enjoy $1 well drinks and Miller Lite drafts and complimentary sweets and treats. The elves will be performing around 9pm. We'll be promoting Rudolph the Red Hosed Reindeer and giving away tickets also. Crew is at 4804 N. Broadway, at Lawrence and Broadway.

And...Rudolph is nearly sold our this Saturday and will most likely continue this trend so I strongly recommend calling ahead for tickets at 773-883-1090, and make sure you get there early enough to find parking. It's a bitch!

My Way of Life

I'm still decorating the house. It's not that I have a lot of stuff. Okay, I'm a homo so I guess I have more then average, but the real problem is I can't find some of it. I think Chris secretly threw away part of Christmas! I have my pink and white Jayne Mansfield XXXMas Tree up, but I can't find the rest of my mirrored garland! My sister in law Marianne sent me the greatest Pier One pink and purple ornaments too. I have my ice rink, snow hill, not to be confused with reindeer mountain, my village, my Elvis angel, and Misfit Toys, but it's just not complete and I can't for the life of me me figure it out!

Now that I'm not rehearsing I've been watching a little more television then usual, and it's pretty horrible. I watched the live version of The Year Without a Santa Claus and it was like a PG Rudolph the Red Hosed Reindeer. Particularly in the beginning when it showed Santa and the North Pole had actually become a large conglomerate. Although it had clever casting with John Goodman (who looks like he;s going to drop dead any moment) and Delta Burke (She looks like an Anime character now, and I LIKE it), it was still rather blah. I've always though Carson Kressley looked a cross between a duck and an elf and he was actually cast as an elf. Yes, they had snippy, gay elves! Sound familiar?

I was still decorating after the movie and Chris turned it on The Colbert Report, which I know is a fave among progressive hip snarksters, and I have seen some hilarious clips from this show but I gotta tell you, I think Barry Manilow deserved to beat this guy in the Emmys. I found him to be rather a one trick pony, and that audience is straight from Married With Children with thier braying in delight at every utterance from Mr. Colbert's mouth. He's a funny, smart guy. Isn't he bored yet? I was after about 4 minutes. It's like shooting fish in a barrel.

What the fuck was Annette Benning doing on Saturday Night Live besides straining to obviously read cue cards? God, it was horrible! I caught it after Rudolph Saturday Night and the only good thing about it was the Robert Smigel cartoon, Diddy's Kiddies. That Robert guy is very funny and clever.

The musical guest was Gwen Stefani, who I liked in No Doubt. Doesn't she have any really good friends to tell her to stop this urban Bratz girl thing she's doing? When I first heard she was yodelling to the Lonely Goat Herder on her new single I was like, 'I am so there!', but coupled with that 13 year girl rap coming from the mouth of a 30 something trillionaire makes her sound retarded. If you're going to have do a nonsensical take on rap you have to make the subject non-sensical. Like a man from mars, eating cars. Not' All the boys like my booty' or whatever. And yes, Margaret Cho was right, the Harajuku girls do look like Minstrels and Gwen's comeback to Cho's accusation in Entertainment Weekly is lame, which is why she will continue to write about all the boys after school...

My Way of Life

Good Lord, Rudolph is packing them in. Friday was a regular full house and Saturday we had people sitting on top of each other. Lots of young people too. I don't know whats going on but perhaps the WBEZ recommendation had something to do with our overflowing houses. We had to turn several people away so I suggest you get your tickets in advance (773-883-1090) and allow plenty of time for parking. If you get there too early you can always go across the street to Joey's Brickhouse for a little Holiday cheer.

Friday night before Rudolph I caught Trista Smith and Jason Grimm in Give My Retards to Broadway. I knew it would be good but was blown away by how great it was. Seriously, this show has it all. Wonderful singing, filthy, filthy jokes and the Jason and Trista, who have taken the art of Vaudeville and breathed new life into it with their own special erotic twist.

You're not going to want to Miss Trista Smith (Ethel Merman in Judy Scary's Etc.,, Coach Collins in SCARRIE, Trixie/Typist/Guard in Caged Dames) in uh...Give My Retards to Broadway, a 'tender', gut busting journey of self-exploration into the minds of our own Trista and her vary talented partner Jason Grimm. There will be song, dance (courtesy of Brigitte Ditmars) and handsomeness provided by Tim Reardon. I'll be there tonight. The show starts at 7:30 and only runs TWO nights! Afterwards run to the Bailwick and see a bunch of adults dressed as reindeers as in 'I went to college for this?', in Rudolph the Red-Hosed Reindeer at 10pm at the Bailiwick tonight.

My Way of Life

Jesus, it's cold outside. My car was stuck in drive this morning, causing me to sit in it unpatiently trying to shift into drive for ten minutes. I have no idea if this has anything to do with the damned weather or not. The Rudolph the Red-Hosed Reindeer opening weekend was a big hit. Seriously- we always 'pad' the house for opening night but I expected fewer audience members for the following day. This was not the case. I suggest you call the Bailiwick for tickets at 773-883-1090 if you want to attend, and remember we ONLY RUN 8 MORE NIGHTS. It's just Fridays and Saturdays as Gladys Dasher is too old and tired to squeeze into her costume on Sundays.

Yesterday I met with Scott Bradley to go over Caged Dames edits and changes. We have some great little surprises for all of you and I'm looking forward to it! We also went to see For your Consideration last night. Myself, Chris, BC, Ludwig, Scott and Jonny. It's always a joy to see the Christopher Guest ensemble up on the screen but this wasn't buster for me. It was rather sad, actually. Sad in a good way. The bright spots 9for me at least) were Chicago's own Jane Lynch and Fred Willard as the idiotic Entertainment Tonight/Access Hollywood type co-hosts. They just had to walk on to the set to get a laugh. HIGH -larious. I can't decide if it's 2 1/2 or 3 Handbags. I always end up liking Guests films more after multiple viewings. This is the case with A Mighty Wind. I don't think he's going to top Waiting For Guffman.
