My Way of Life

Last I did scene work with the Mean Girls and I have to say we had a good rehearsal. The girls (and guys) kicked ass and I can see that they're getting into it. Before we worked the scenes we discussed what makes mean high school girls tick and they all agreed that girls in Carrie weren't campy or exaggerated in any way. Ask any girl, homo, fattie (or former fattie) about high school and they'll most likely agree.

I couldn't wait to get out of high school myself-I thought it would never end. Unlike Carrie White I fought back. Not physically because I have the coordination and courage of a epileptic field mouse but with my words. That was the one the thing that saved me high school. Learning to get back at others by hurling mean, funny insults back at them. That's how I survived. I did pretty good for a girly, brown, acne ridden, underweight teenage boy, but you carry that shit with you for the rest of your life and no amount of therapy can erase it. Um, I have to go eat a chocolate donut now...,

My Way of Life

We had a music rehearsal last night with Margaret White (Ed Jones), Carrie White (Brannen Daugherty) and Miss Collins (Brigitte Ditmars) with our musical director , Peter Storms. The actors stuck their toes into the song and eventually immersed themselves in the music but of course the comfort level is not there yet. Poor Ed barely has a chance to breath in his numbers but that's Margaret White's nature. Perhaps we can have an oxygen tank nearby. Brannen is acclimating to his role quickly and really has a sense of Carrie White. It's fun to watch him explore his inner geek.

I'm going to be guest starring in Verbatim Verboten this FRIDAY. I finally got an e-mail telling me what I would be doing and I think you'll be pleased. Club kid/monster/murderer/moron James St. James is one of my assignments. I have a lot to draw on because I knew so many people like that back in 'the day'. I guess I was a little like that myself..., Rather unpleasant people they were, but the drugs made us all different back then. In Michael Martin's absence the host of VV is Dave Awl, and in Googling the show I found lots of interesting things about the fella. He's...he's...smart. He wrote like, a book and everything..., Check out his world here. And to think I ate IHOP breakfast food with him...,

My Way of Life

Just came in from dinner and a movie with Christopher, Ed Jones, and Ludwig. Dinner was Mamacitas on Broadway. This restaurant reminds me of when I started seeing Christopher over 8 years ago. He lived on Roscoe off of Broadway so he ate there a lot and as I walked down Broadway I still see those hungry faces devouring every bit if man that passes them by,but now they're mixed in with baby strollers and bad Sarah Jessica Parker clones and metrosexual type guys. It's a dirty shame...

Coincidentally, that was the name of the movie we saw. I always see a John Waters movie on opening weekend. Mr. Waters was a HUGE influence on my entire being. Seeing Female Trouble and Pink Flamingos was a revelation for me in 1980 at the Parkway Theater, which is now the Lenscrafters off of Diversey Ave, on Broadway. I left that theater a new man. 19, and filled with visions of a sick new world. I don't know if I even soaked in the plots of the films. Just seeing Divine on the big screen and hearing those words coming out of their mouths and the sets, and hair, and the clothes...it was like discovering a whole new world. It totally electrified me. There were other people out there that didn't look and act like all the sickening idiots I grew up around. As a matter of fact the people I grew up around would have detested these people and I couldn't wait to be just like them! So, that was the start of my devotion to John Waters but I must admit the last film I thoroughly enjoyed from his was probably Serial Mom, and I say probably, because it took a few viewings to truly appreciate Kathleen Turner's performance in that film. Pecker was okay, but I've yet to see it after the one viewing at the theater and Cecil B. Demented was just crappy. Did Mr. Waters lose a bet and have to cast Melanie Griffith?

I liked A Dirty Shame better then Pecker and Cecil B. Demented but it really doesn't hold a candle to Serial Mom, Hairspray, Polyester, Female Trouble ( the best), or Pink Flamingos (the most notorious), and it drives me fucking crazy. I wanted to sit in that theater and feel that way again. The way I did in 1980 at the Parkway when Mink Stole's character, Connie Marble say's 'You can eat shit for all I care'..., I'd never heard this phrase and I remember thinking in the theater 'I can't wait until I can say this to somebody!'

I don't think it's going to happen and I guess I'm being greedy to expect the magic Mr. Waters had with Divine , Edith Massey and all of his old cohorts, many of who are dead. As a matter fact, Mink Stole as 'Marge the Neuter' was one of the highlights of A Dirty Shame, stealing every scene she was in in only the way she can . She's looking older but I still see the spirit of Taffy Davenport burning brightly in her. The other highlight of the film was 'Big Ethel' played by Suzanne Shepherd as Big Ethel was also pitch perfect for Waters type of comedy. You may know her as Carmela Soprano's mother.

I also like the seedy loook of the film, it gave it a feeling of his old movies but it just didn't click like his classics and I have no idea what to do about it and really , considering my body of work compared to Mr. Waters who the hell am I to say shit? But I will, since everybody and his second cousin seems to have a two bit opinion about everything nowadays. Here's what I took away from the this movie...

Funny idea, yeah, let's do it, yeah, this would be funny, this is cool, nobody knows about this, yet, we have to include this, and this, and this and this, and....what we're we doing? Oh, I don't know....Let's just have them all go crazy in the streets.

God knows I know all about this thought process. The entire process just sucks the life out of you and by the time you come to the ending you just want it to... end...

So, should you go see A Dirty Shame? Yes, just for Mink Stole's first scene. She and Suzanne Shepherd should get their own sitcom. There are other genuinely funny moments and Selma Blair and Tracy Ullman are wonderful as well. Plus, there's always the fun of identifying people from his classics , Mary Vivian Pierce, Channing Wilroy, Alan Wendl, and even Jean Hill. Is it on the level of Female Trouble or even Desperate Living? Nope. But it's still very funny at times-, well, I thought it was funny, although Chris said he didn't like it, he sure laughed enough. I honestly don't know if I just refuse to give up on John Waters because I strongly associate it with my youth and my judgement is impaired or what..., When I like it something it's usually for life. Good thing, huh, Christopher?

Yesterday I was going through an yet another account at work and I suddenly heard this chorus in my head. Ann-Margret was singing an Elvis type tune, and the lyric was 'I'm Breakin' Out'. This was obviously a sign that God wants me to write my take on the classic women in prison musical. Who am I to argue with our Lord?

Plus, (as if you needed more)...a dance MEGAMIX 'Adventures Into Poseidon' by Eric Lewis at The Beat Factory in NYC and the newer version of 'Just Panties (What Else Do I Need)'. ORDER YOURS TODAY!

I'm back at work today. I haven't fully shaken off this ailment. I don't even know what it is but I suspect it's a flu of some sort. I was achy and feverish and just feeling yucky. There was no headache or upset stomach, so who knows what the hell it is. I laid in bed all day yesterday and caught up on DAYTIME TV. I think the highlight of that was watching Divorce Court, a truly pathetic show with the lowest of the low on the social food chain airing their boring dirty laundry for the sole purpose of being on television. Remember when being on television was something special? So anyway, this particular case was about the strained relationship between a a father and his 17 year daughter who kept referring to her dad as a 'sperm donor', thanks to her mother who was standing next to her with a permanent smirk on her face. Towards the end of the trial the judge announced that megastar Lorenzo Lamas was going to share his experience with the family because he had gone through a similar situation. Huh? Yes, and after that Carmen Electra is going to explain how to smoothly transition your property adjustment order...,

I had my first scene rehearsals with actors yesterday. I had to cancel Tuesdays rehearsal because myself and Carrie White were ill. It went well and the actors were patient, but I have to admit I wasn't the strongest leader yesterday. We did figure out how we wanted to stage the read through, borrowing from the Neo-futuristic readings of 'bad movies'. They usually have the actors sit in the back and do their scenes downstage, so that's what we're gonna do. Thrilling, huh?

That's What Friends Are For

Last night I went over to Ludwigs and BC's to watch some of the Emmy Awards. It was nice to see Angels in America sweep the show, although I've yet to watch the entire series. I really wanted Mariska Hargitay to win because A. I love Law and Order SVU and B. She's the daughter of one my favorite stars, the legendary actress and sex bomb Jayne Mansfield, but once again Allison Janney took the award and and made a rather awkward request for Mariska to join her onstage. She then invited the other nominees onstage but they declined, leaving Mariska up there with the presenters. Perhaps Mariska should have taken a cue from her mother, the ORIGINAL 'wardrobe malfunction' gal and used the opportunity for her shoulder strap to 'accidentally' break. Speaking of shoulders, did anybody else find Barbara Walters' exposed shoulder rather creepy?
Afterwards Ludwig insisted I watch 'Nip/Tuck', a show. I've never seen it before. I did enjoy it but it was rather sleazy. Usually these types of shows have one unbelievable plot twist per show. This one had illegal surgery, murder, underage sex and INCEST rolled up in one episode. Interesting to a point, but kind of incredibly unbelievable. While we were watching the show the subject of Botox came up and Ludwig, one of my best friends, immediately told me I am definitely a candidate for Botox, and I should have considered it a while ago. He did buy the pizza.

My Way of Life

Catch up time! Friday I saw Sky Captain and the World of tomorrow with my two fellas Mike Miller and Steve Hickson. We loved it. Clever. Cool. Great to look at. Just like me! We ate at Chili's beforehand and the joint was crawling with college boys. Cute ones with not so cute girls. Mike and Steve visibly drooled. I of course, maintained my star composure.

Speaking of 'star composure', did I mention that Steve Hickson and I will be participating in the Bailiwick Theater Trailblazer Awards this year? They're honoring Charles Busch, who I suppose is a role model for me. Steve and I will be portraying Bette and Joan. Not too much pressure..., David Zak informed us later that he plans to auction us off like cattle to the highest bidder. How lovely. Might as well have 'property of Bailiwick Theater' tattooed on my backside!

Yesterday I spent the afternoon doing some SCARRIE rewrites. We decided to add a scene with Mrs. Snell*, Sue's boozy mom. We are also adding Miss Finch, Principal Morton's secretary.
Afterwards, I went to the gym, worked out then, like a good wife went Jewel to buy ice cream and LaCroix waters for my husband. I ran into the handsome and single Derek Czaplewski who was apparently stocking up for a bender. I pray he finds Jesus.

Please keep October 31 open to attend our benefit HELL-O-ween Prom. Food, drinks and a SCARRIE The Musical read through at Theater Building Chicago.

My Way of Life

I've got the 'Plug It Up' chant stuck in my head from SCARRIE, and it won't go away.

Sue: (Laughing) It's Carrie, she's got her period, she thinks she's dying, that's why she's crying...,

Now I admit that lyrically, this is no masterpiece but what propels the piece is the guitar riff or whatever that Taylor Ross has added to the song. I can't wait until we rehearse it with the band. Perhaps Celine Dion will use it in her Vegas show. She's very Carrie-like herself.

I graced the gym with my presence last night and benched pressed my usual pitiful limit. I felt a little more energized then usual so I did my safe max 35lbs. on each side. I'm afraid to go too high because I hate asking people for help (issues, sweetie)..., I used to not want to go to the gym because I was just too self-conscious, but there are plenty of people in worse shape then me and hell they do it, and because of my extremely busy lifestyle I don't go as often as I should I still want to at least have some tone in my aging vessel of a body. If fans only knew the price I paid..., Excuses are for lazy losers. And where else can you go and see hot inshape guys naked up-close and personal ?! Just ask the the locker room lizards. They're the ones that are casually toweling themselves off when I arrive and are still toweling themselves off 90 minutes later when I hit the shower.

I'm actually in better shape now then I was in my 20's since I spent my 20's in nightclubs. Thank God, alcohol and cocaine kept me dangerously underweight in my youth (6'1", 135 lbs.), so now I'm just moderately underweight-175. So, if you're in your early 20's and want to make sure you don't get fat when you're older you should start binge drinking now and doing coke, meth or other appetite suppressing drugs as well. Then, by the time you get sober, you'll already be so underweight, 40 more pounds won't look that bad on you! Attending 12-step meetings can be a great way to meet people. You're welcome.

My Way of Life

Yesterday I went so deep into a Lily Munster tangent that I never mentioned how well our first SCARRIE music rehearsal went. All I can say is this having a Music Director thing is really swell! Being able to change something in the song right away sure is nifty. Peter Storms plays beautifully and by the end of the rehearsal we all fell madly in love with him. There are a few new faces mixed in with the tired old ones. We've quite few of the bright young things from Camp Nimrod for Girls. You know, the musical about the a girl and horse that uh, fall in love..., I've learned not to Google 'girl and horse' at work because of this show. One of the cast members, Ryan Pfeiffer, our Tommie Ross, oops, I mean TOMMY Ross, actually saw the first show of mine that was ever produced with Sweetback. Superpussyvixens, Go Faster! KILL! , my Russ Meyers* tribute. Every night I would jump from a 20 foot raised platform dressed as Rosie, the psychotic lesbian Go-Go dancer, in two inched heeled boots. Ahhhh....,Good times...,

*Fun faggy fact!- Tura Satana, the extraordinary force of nature who played Varla danced in Calumet City, IL** back when Calumet City was known as SIN CITY. The first gay bars I used to go to were in Calumet City, IL back in 19__ .

**Not so faggy fun fact- The producers of the Blue Brothers movie wanted to film it in Calumet City, IL*** but the stupid mayor at the time said no because of perpetuating the negative stereotype of Calumet City.

***Faggier fun fact- Judith Beasley, Lily Tomlin's housewife alter-ego hails from Calumet City, IL.

My Way of Life

Last week I got Betty, my car a new toy. A Lily Munster Funco Bobblehead , and I'm quite pleased with it, although she looks eerily like Joan Crawford. Chris pointed out that she's not smiling, and Lily usually smiled. You've got to give crazy old Yvonne DeCarlo her props for choosing to play Lily Munster like Donna Reed on crack. I mean, the writing for The Munsters was pretty crappy..., You wouldn't be seeing The Munsters on eternal syndication if not for the brilliant work of Fred Gwynne, Al Lewis and Yvonne DeCarlo. Fred Gwynne could take the lamest groan inducing joke and make it work and the chemistry he had with Al Lewis is pretty amazing. Because of my many show business contacts I've heard some frightening stories about nutty old Yvonne DeCarlo, but remember, Follies* 'I'm Still Here' was written with her in mind . Surprised I knew such a faggy musical theater fact, aren't you? Hickson, Czaplewski and Howard are rubbing off on me.

The Beetle dashboard is HUGE. Larger then some of the stages we've performed on, so theoretically I could really trash it up and fill my dashboard with Bobbleheads. Sort of like those women with a car full of kids with a cigarette dangling out of their mouths that have a mountain of Beanie Babies piled in the rear window of their Ford Escorts.

*Fun Fact! Joan Crawford was 'this close' to playing the same role in the much discussed but never made film version of 'Follies' in the early 70's

My Way of Life

We finally had the first read through of SCARRIE The Musical yesterday. I have to admit I was nervous even though we've already mounted this show six years ago. New people, new songs, new vibe. My home was crawling with actors and I tried not to feel too insecure as they sat through my interpretations of the music. That's the thing. They're just sitting while they listen to a recording of someone with an adequate voice sing for 2-5 minutes. It's just not very exciting..., and sitting there, watching people listen to you sing is even worse. The music needs the voices and the characters to bring it to life, but we had to hear what it sounded like, so there you go...,

I have to say we got along famously and these people can sing their asses off so I'm looking forward to hearing the music out of their bodies. Well, maybe not Steve Hickson's body..., They're a young and vibrant group. Well once again, not Hickson, but...,

My Way of Life

So I get home from my meeting with famed Chicago director turned Notre Dame University college professor, Jay Paul Skelton , having just braved Target, in search of party snacks, toilet bowl cleaner and Sea Monkeys (I'll explain later), when I listen to a message from Jackie Anderson, my stage manager. "Uh, hi David...Graham Kostic had to drop out of the workshop"...,
Graham had a very good reason and I probably would have done the same thing in his situation, but suddenly my mild sinus headache which I usually always have became a full throttled Phyllis Stephens* 'sick headache' as in 'Frank, I have a sick headache'. After calling Jackie back and going over our options I decided the best course of action was to lay on my back in the dark as this position as served me well many times before.

I recovered and went to Brooke Allen's birthday bash at Star Bar and luckily the answer to our dilemma was right under our noses in the form of Brannen Daugherty who, after weighing our options we all agreed would be the best choice to play Carrie White. Brannen was originally slated to read the part of Tommy Ross, the all-American boy who asks Carrie to the prom at the urging of his girlfriend, Sue Snell, but thanks to our back up high school boys we had a back-up Tommy Ross as well and hopefully all is well for the first SCARRIE read through tonight. Brooke's party was quite the success. I was impressed..., She had every non-equity actor in the city there. Had there been some sort of terrible disaster storefront theaters across the city would have to cancel their current productions. I gave Miss Brooke the ever-lasting gift of Sea Monkeys and and a 80's New Wave CD compilation, which she pretended to love and I was able to talk to everybody in the world that I need to talk to for the rest of the year 2004. Did I mention Jim Glaub is insane?

*Fun fact!... Mabel Albertson was the sister of Jack Albertson better known as 'The Man' in 'Chico and the Man', and of course our beloved Manny Rosen in 'The Poseidon Adventure'

My Way of Life

Good morning Handbaggers. I'm sitting at my home office desk taking time out of my busy day to share my busy life with you. I've spent the morning labeling and copying songs for my SCARRIE demo CD for the first read through tomorrow featuring the vocal talents of yours truly, and what a treat that is. Sort of like Dinah Shore singing the theme from 'Shaft'...,

Yesterday was a full day. I cleaned the house, including the those damned hard wood floors. Acres of hard wood floors. Joan would have been proud. Our musical director Peter Storms and Taylor Ross came over later in the afternoon and we discussed music rehearsal options. Scheduling and going through dates and options is like trigonometry to me. I'm terrible at it and I just shut down, but I furiously wrote down all the options and we made some decisions. THEN, we all went over to Taylor's and I laid down some tracks for SCARRIE . I felt like Joey Heatherton in the Serta Mattress commercials. I needed just the right mood to find my inner Carrie White. Then, I was on fire!

My day ended with a delightful backyard soiree at the home of Hugh Mathis, a friend of Hell in a Handbag and I learned all about the history of the League of Chicago Theaters from a rather disgruntled ex-employee who made me feel even better when he told me he used to do what i did but that it just burned him out beyond belief. I guess we don't have it as bad as some. Sure, we are usually always busy but I don't feel put out, because it's our passion, our oxygen..., and passion only invigorates.

My Way of Life

The first SCARRIE read through with music sung by yours truly will be Monday, Sept. 13, 7pm, at my palatial estate. It's about friggin' time- wouldn't you say so? I'd like to say it all went smoothly but then we both know that just isn't true. We had a hell of a time casting the leads, because of the wonderful talent we had at our fingertips. The decision was prolonged because, quite frankly there were differences in opinion, but hopefully we've made it through the darkness into the light of an exciting new day. Matt Gunnels has decided not to direct due to the fact that we're really concentrating on the music, so his special skills aren't really necessary for what we're doing now, so there you have it. We still love each other deeply.

I was up late last night trying to adjust the script with the song changes so Jacks could make a PDF file from it so everybody would be on the same page. Earlier that evening I was in Highland Park with Scott laying down the track for 'Say It', Margaret Whites' first solo. I also gave him incredibly bad lyrics to add to an existing song from the show, I'm Carrie, Pt. 2 . Bad, in the stinky poo-poo, so bad, it's good sense...,

My Way of Life

I'm getting back into my groove, thank goodness. Last night was spent working on the SCARRIE script and tonight I'm going to Scott Lamberty's to work on a new Margaret White song tentatively titled 'Say It!'. I wrote this song with the help of my keyboard that has all of these pre-programmed rhythms in it. I believe it is to the beat of 'March #2'.

And Eve was weak, so very weak, Eve was weak, the little sneak...,

Little Stevie Hickson sent me information on a show that seems right up our alley. It combines two of Joan's films, Berserk! and Strait-Jacket and it's entitled Haywire! I immediately e-mailed the contacts for information but haven't heard a peep. I've always thought Berserk would make a fun musical and I've even written the opening number for it but of course 11 other homos probably have the same idea. After we did SCARRIE in 1998 I found all sorts of Carrie parodies out there including one that used our title (apparently the author got the idea from John Waters), so in the world of camp/cult/pop culture it's more then likely to have already been done. Surprisingly, I think ours was one of the first. While searching for more information on Haywire I found the website of the man that wrote a couple of songs for the show, Fred Barton. He has a collection of MP3's that I thoroughly enjoyed, particularly from a show entitled 'The Two Svengalis'. Have any of you heard of this show?

I'm more then just a pretty face, I take on the tough issues. Guns are bad.

Subject: Urgent: Don't Let the Assault Weapons Ban Expire
Dear friend,

The national ban on military-style assault weapons will expire on Monday, September 13th, unless President Bush and Congress act now. President Bush promised to renew the ban, but instead he's letting it expire -- he has refused to call on Congress to deliver it for his signature.
For 10 years the assault weapons ban has taken the deadliest weapons off our streets, cutting their use in crimes 66 percent. But beginning Tuesday the 14th, an 18-year-old will once again be able to buy an AK-47 assault rifle in most states.
We can stop this if we speak up now. President Bush and Congress must renew the assault weapons ban, not let it expire. Please join me in demanding it, at:

My Way of Life

Yesterday morning was spent in Hammond, IN at my uncle's memorial service and the turn out was very good. My brother and 2 sisters were very close with Uncle Steve as he spent a lot of time at our house, so it was tough for them. On a lighter note, Christopher and I couldn't help but laugh at the look on my Nana's face as some of my uncle's old 'biker' buddies came to pay their respects. Covered in tatoos and wearing their best bandanas and motorcycle boots they sharply contrasted the rest of the family, but that was the life my uncle led and it was good to see his friends give 'Big Steve' a fitting sendoff. My uncle was what you would call the black sheep of the family, although I'm not sure there are any white sheep in our family. He had a very big heart and will be missed.

Tonight are the auditions for POSEIDON! An Upside Down Musical in Omaha, NE, so if you know anybody there tell them to hurry on down (or up) to Omaha.

Yesterday I hit the gym, and it smacked me back. I met one of my musical collaborator's there, Taylor Ross and he gave me some songs he's been working on. The tricky opening number(s)- and I was very pleased. These are like, 5 ditties linked together beginning with the nearly naked high school girls (God, I wonder how many pervs will Google that phrase) in the locker room ending with Carrie breaking a lightbulb with her MIND. The new read through date is Sept. 13, so I'm going through the script again to see what needs changing and/or correcting before Jacks distributes it. I tried to write one tiny verse for Sue Snell for 'I'm Carrie, Pt. 2' and just stared at the computer screen, playing Pop and Drop at the same time. Life goes on...

My Way of Life

The weekend has brought more sad news. My uncle, my mother's younger, and only brother (60) dropped dead Friday. I don't know what the hell is going on but it sure makes you think. Working on SCARRIE has been difficult as I've not been in a 'wacky' frame of mind but time stands still for no one and we've made progress. We've finalized a cast and the read-through has been changed to next week as I will be attending a funeral Monday.

Chris and I have been trying to escape via movie therapy. We saw Vanity Fair Friday afternoon. I enjoyed it although I thought Reese Witherspoon's Becky could have been a little grittier and I've never read the book. I read a rather boring article about Ms. Witherspoon in a rather boring Vanity Fair magazine on the plane to LA this past week. Tonight we rented Bad Santa. It was okay, but I was expecting a little bit more with all the hype and good reviews it supposedly received. Billy Bob's behavior was rather unbelievable. I mean, what employer would put up with that? And the word 'fuck' wears thin after the first 317 times. John Ritter was the funniest thing about the movie, and Chris and I found it strange that Cloris Leachman wasn't in the credits.

My Way of Life

I'm back from my sudden trip to California (Orange County). I try not to get too personal in this blog but I should tell you that the reason for my absence was the death of my partner's mother after a heartbreaking battle with Alzheimer's disease. Chris was there when it happened . He had been there for over two weeks. Yes, it was a sad occasion but due to the cruelty of Alzheimer's it was also good to know that she wasn't suffering anymore. Chris's family, including his mom, Jean, has always been very accepting of me and I adore them as well. All you have to do is know Chris to see why they love him and would want what makes him happy. Yeah, I know we tease each other mercilessly sometimes but I was so proud to be with him this week. He helps me be a better human being and I need all the help I can get.

You can make a memoral donation in the name of Jean Yourex to the Alzheimers Association of Orange County by clicking here.

Now, back to our regularly scheduled program.
